The “Mother of Women’s Basketball,” Senda Berenson Abbot, was born March 19, 1868. While teaching at Smith College, she organized and officiated the first women’s basketball game ever to be played. After meeting with the inventor of basketball, Dr. James Naismith, she wrote an official rulebook for women’s college basketball. In 1985, she became the first woman to be inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame.

James Naismith, the Canadian physical education instructor who invented basketball in 1891, had 14 days to create an indoor game that would provide an "athletic distraction" for a rowdy class through the brutal New England winter. Naismith applied the rules from Duck on a Rock, a game that he played as a child, to his newly invented sport.

He served in the navy and earned a purple heart along with other honors during world war 2. He enjoyed many sports including golf,swimming,basketball, and football. Very athletic and interesting man one of my favorites!
