Herbert von Karajan (Heribert, Ritter von Karajan; 1908–1989), was an Austrian orchestra and opera conductor. He was most famously associated with the Berlin Philharmonic, of which he was principal conductor for 35 years. He is generally regarded as one of the greatest conductors of the 20c, and was a dominant figure in European classical music from the 1960s until his death. Part of the reason for this was the large number of recordings he made and their prominence during his lifetime.
Herbert von Karajan...the great conductor of the Berlin Philharmonic, and who I heard in Vienna in 1978 conducting the Marriage of Figaro. I stood in line for hours for a ticket. That night, the great opera house lit up like fireflies with people reading the scores.
