The Big Run is 10 marathons in 10 days and the aim is to raise awareness and sponsorship for Progeria Family Circle (UK). This is a debilitating condition that causes the body to age at an accelerated rate and has dominated the young lives of 14-year old Hayley Okines and 13-year old Harry Crowther. In April 2012, Charlotte Okines, sister of Hayley, and her friend Becky Reid will run from Harry’s home in Yorkshire to Hayley’s home county of Kent – a total of 272 miles.

In many 13-year-old Hayley Okines is like any typical teenager. She likes clothes, boys, Justin Bieber, experimenting with eye make-up and reading books by Jacqueline Wilson. But she also has to deal with things most teenagers never have to consider, such as baldness and hip problems. Hayley suffers from a rare genetic ageing disorder called progeria that means she ages eight times faster than other people.
Hayley Okines, 17-years-old , suffered from a rare premature aging disorder called Hutchinson-Gilford Progeria Syndrome (aka Progeria). Progeria is caused by a protein called progerin that interferes with lamina A. Lamina A is a protein that stabilizes a cell's nucleus. That being given, children who suffer from this tend to age 10 times faster.
