Hannah Kent, Burial Rites

Beautifully written, it reeks of authenticity. You get a real sense of how harsh and arbitrary life must have been in Iceland nearly 200 years ago. I agree with the attached review, though - the novel really sings when it's written in the voice of Agnes. The constant shift in person can be distracting.

An Icelandic woman is convicted of murder and spends her last days living with a family and waiting for her execution day. Based on a true story. Very moving! Well written!!!
