Great Plains State Park is nestled in the shadows of the Wichita Mountains on the shores of Tom Steed Lake in Oklahoma, and it is extremely appealing for the variety of outdoor activities it has to offer.
The Great Plains was home to many of the Native American tribes. Some of the most well-known tribes from this area are the Pawnee, the Lakota, and the Cheyenne. While some of these tribes were nomadic, some were also mostly sedentary, growing a few crops for food. Many of these tribes, while very independent, came together in times of war. A great example of this is the Blackfoot confederacy or the combined forces of the Lakota, Cheyenne, and the Arapaho in the Great Sioux of 1867.
