African Resistance to Colonial Rule: Menelik II (1844–1913), emperor of Ethiopia, defeated General Oreste Baratieri's Italian army and its Eritrean allies at the Battle of Adwa. This victory brought fame to the emperor outside of Ethiopia and consolidated the independence of the country until its invasion by Italy in 1935.
