January 6 is a special day in the traditions of Western Christianity.  For many years it was celebrated as "Old Christmas" in the Appalachian Mountains of the southeastern United States.  Folk tradition said that at the stroke of midnight on January 5, farm animals would bow down to honour the Christ Child.
