Is an English comedy actor who appeared in 3 of the early Carry On films "Carry On Nurse" (1959) "Carry On Teacher" (1959) & "Carry On Constable" (1960). After which he told Peter Rogers that he did not wish to do any more Carry Ons, though he did return for "Carry On Columbus" (1992). He was appointed Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in the 1998 Queen's Birthday Honours & was promoted to Commander (CBE) in 2008.

He was one of the main ensemble in 26 of the Carry On films and appeared in numerous British television shows and radio comedies with Tony Hancock and Kenneth Horne.He died on 15 April 1988 in his flat the cause of death was an overdose of barbiturates. An inquest recorded an open verdict, as it was not possible to establish whether his death was a suicide or an accident.
