Ecclefechan Tart ~ Quite simply a rich, dried fruit filled, sweet tart from its namesake, the village of Ecclefechan in the Dumfries and Galloway region of southern Scotland. The tart is also known as Border Tart, which is lovely but not as endearing as Ecclefechan.
Although Butter Tarts are considered quintessential Canadian treats, they originated in the sweet butter tarts of Scotland and Northern England. One such recipe is the famous Scottish Ecclefechan Butter Tart, though it's hard to know whether our 1740s characters would have known of this treat in their day.
