Dr. Ella Piper...Fort Myers’ best-known early black business leader may have been Dr. Ella Piper. In 1916, she opened the city’s first beauty parlor. She was a foot doctor, owner of the Big 4 Soft Drink Company and a landowner. Her beauty parlor’s clientele included the wives of inventor Thomas Edison and auto tycoon Henry Ford. Although it has been almost 60 years since her 1954 death at the age of 70, her name lives on in the Dr. Piper Center for Social Services Inc.
