Each spring the wild flowers come into bloom at the Antelope Valley Poppy Reserve, a section of the Mojave Desert Grassland habitat. As the winters’ precipitation determines the intensity of the bloom, this year’s much needed record rainfall resulted in a firework of colors lighting the gentle rolling hills of the valley. Generally the season starts as early as mid-February and can run through May. While many species have shed their petals, the blooming poppies are still attracting visitors

We Welcome You to The Desert of Maine! The Desert of Maine is a 40-acre (160,000 m2) tract of exposed glacial silt (a sand-like substance, but finer-grained than sand) surrounded by a pine forest near the town of Freeport, Maine, in the United States. The Desert of Maine is not a true desert, as it receives an abundance of precipitation, and the surrounding vegetation is being allowed to encroach on the barren dunes.

Photo by @gerdludwig After a spectacular wildflower season, the Antelope Valley California Poppy Reserve Center in the Mojave Desert closed its doors, scheduled to reopen in February 2018. Here is a selection of 4 images I have taken during short trips to Antelope Valley last month. Due to the heavy precipitation during the rainy season, the poppy bloom blanketed the rolling desert hills of the valley but often closed early as a result of cold winds. Virga. Visible streaks of precipitation that evaporate before reaching the ground. Sort of look like cloud commas or jelly fish.
