Since y intercept is a coordinate, so it can be either positive or negative.  To find the y intercept of a straight line L whose equation is given, set 0 in x to get rid of x which will then pave way for finding the y intercept.  Similarly, x intercept of a straight line is the x coordinate in the point on the x axis through which the line L is passing.
