It feels wrong to visit coastal North Carolina and not check out one of the state's iconic lighthouses. A visit to the white one on Ocracoke Island (the oldest of the group), accessible only via ferry, combines beautifully with a day on the beach. Pack a picnic lunch. —L.M.
Day 4 - Morehead City, NC Morehead City is a popular port along the Intracoastal Waterway and is always bustling with boat activity and excitement. There are plenty of interesting shops to browse in Morehead or you can tour the meticulously restored town of Beaufort, just across the Newport River. Beaufort is the third oldest town in North Carolina and has a 21-block historic district that includes a boardwalk lined with boats on one side and unique shops perfect for browsing .
My favorite part of visiting coastal North Carolina, besides the coast, is the Calabash style seafood. So good! My kids beg me to make this all the time. It is my most favorite food in the whole world!
