Freeman Hrabowski (born August 13, 1950) has been the president of the University of Maryland, Baltimore County since 1992, making UMBC a nationally ranked STEM research institution. He is an advisor to President Obama on education issues and has written two books on empowering black youth. The great-great grandson of a Polish immigrant and an enslaved woman, Hrabowski participated in Birmingham's Children's Crusade at the age of 12 and spent 5 days in jail.
