One of my favorite music stories ever is when Migus got pissed off at an off time piano player so he walked over to the piano mid-song and tore out the piano strings with his bare hands. Big scary dude but one of the greats.
Charles Mingus Jr. (22 Apr, 1922 – 5 Jan, 1979) Influential Jazz Double Bassist, Composer & Bandleader. Mingus's compositions retained hot soulful feel of Hard Bop, drew heavily from Black Gospel, elements of Third Stream, Free Jazz, & Classical music. Mingus avoided categorization, own brand of music / Tradition w/ Unique, Unexplored Realms of Jazz. Cited Duke Ellington & church as his main influences.
