ST. CHARLES, ST. CHARLES COUNTY, ca 1870. Founded under French rule about 1769 by Louis Blanchette le Chasseur, a native of Quebec, Canada, St. Charles was originally known as Les Petites Cotes.  From 1784 to 1800, the village was under Spanish authority, as the seat of government for Spanish possessions north of the Missouri River.  The Spanish referred to the village as San Fernando and later as San Carlos del Missouri.  [SHS of MO-Columbia Photo Collection #2002.0146]
