The Black Wolf is a melanistic colour variant of the grey wolf (Canis lupus). Genetic research has shown that wolves with black pelts owe their distinctive coloration to a mutation which occurred in domestic dogs, and was carried to wolves through wolf-dog hybridisation.
Black Wolf: This photo of a Black Wolf (Canis Lupus) was taken in December 2011 at Wolf Hollow in Ipswich Massachusetts. Wolf Hollow is a non-profit organization established in 1990 to teach people about the importance of the wolf in the wild. Black Wolves are most common in North America; about half of the wolves that are reintroduced into Wyoming's Yellowstone National Park are black.
