Henry Haag “Harry” James (March 15, 1916 – July 5, 1983) was an actor and musician best known as a trumpeter who led a swing band during the Big Band Swing Era of the 1930s and 1940s. He was especially known among musicians for his astonishing technical proficiency as well as his superior tone.He was second only to Glenn Miller as the most successful recording artist of 1942


On January 7th, 1940, Woody Herman plays at the Famous Door on 52nd St. in New York City. Herman was a famous big band leader that played the clarinet, saxophone and also sang. His band was usually referred to as "The Herd". The Famous Door was located at 66 W. 52nd Street on the south side between 5th and 6th Avenue not far from Radio City Music Hall or MOMA today. That block was known for having some of the great jazz clubs of that era.
