It was found that, given the low resolution of the screens in those days, drawing a straight line and a line in the 45 degrees angle was easier to do and more recognizable than the straight cursor.

Great idea for if I ever get a professional job or one that require a tattoo not to show, that way I can still have one and have it hidden! I would probably have the arrow pointing up, though...
