P/O Wallace "Jock" Cunningham of No 19 Squadron RAF sits inside the officers mess at RAF Fowlmere in 1940. When the satellite airfield for RAF Duxford was reopened with the eruption of hostilities in 1939, it was still partly a farm, complete with livestock. The 23-year-old Scotsman recalled, "Fowlmere…wasn't really as nice as the airfield here because we were living in Nissen huts right next to a piggery. And the smell from the pigs wasn't very pleasant. We didn't think much of that."
