Self Portrait: Still Life
Frances Hodgkins (NZ 1869–1947), Self portrait: still life, o/cardboard, ca 1935. In later life Hodgkins felt uncomfortable being photographed, partly because she was an older woman in a young Modernist market. Never painting a traditional self-portrait, she created highly individual, semi-abstracted groups of favorite objects: scarves, shoes, jewelry and flowers, providing what today seems like a Post-modern metaphor for the self. This strategy of self-depiction was unusual for the period.
