Miner's Scrip: A form of indentured Servitude. Many miners were paid in scrip instead of cash by their employers. These token coins and paper money could only be exchanged for merchandise within the company store. Being paid in scrip was like trying to work off a loan whose interest rate that is so high that the individual is forever in debt. There was no competition in the coal fields because the scrip could only be used at the mine they were minted for.
