Garden at Number 10. 2011

Bought a house with the coolest garden. Tropical plantings. High rainfall with mild temps. Facing South bank so not high sunshine. Maybe a couple of frosts each winter.

My first saffron. 10 of them. Even though the crop was so small. The flavour was fantastic. Used them fresh as I didn't trust them to dry.

In November the rose flowered. Didn't even know it was there.

By October. still very shady in the lower terrace. warm enough to grow most things but not enough sunlight getting through.

The middle terrace contains a sea of apricot coloured canna lilies. Over 2 metres tall. I had cut them all back in June and as the days warmed into October these things exploded with triffid like growth

By October I made a bamboo trellis to take peas. I thought the concrete wall from the stadium would provide extra warmth.

Scourge of the lower terrace garden. The giant bamboo. I decided to us it around the garden for edging. Where it touched the ground it rotted.

The terraced garden didn't work so well. The bamboo to the right of the photo is a 3-4 sq metre clump of giant bamboo. The roots were everywhere. In the lower parts nothing much grew and in the highr parts away from the bamboo leafy greens were fine. Loads of Cos, Spinach, silver beet. away from the bamboo peas/ beans/ tomatoes were all OK.

From the farm I grabbed old fenceposts and used them to terrace the bank (previously covered by cardboard). I planted all the spring crops here.
