Hone Heke fells the flagstaff flying the British flag at Kororareka. Arthur McCormick's painting of Hone Heke chopping down the British flag on Maiki hill above Kororareka in 1845 was one of a number of illustrations for Reginald Horsley's New Zealand; romance of empire published in 1908. It is one of the more enduring images associated with the New Zealand Wars.
