Napier, New Zealand: is a city (pop.66,200) with a seaport in Hawke's Bay on the eastern coast of the North Island. It is about 320 kilometres northeast of Wellington. It is a popular tourist city, with a unique concentration of 1930s Art Deco architecture. I spent two days there during my mouth tour of New Zealand in 1995. The cozy IYH was right across the street from the ocean while supermarkets nearby offered the budget traveler the chance to buy food then cook it in the hostel kitchen.
