The Latin Rule was specific codes for the Templar Order. Its 72 clauses defined the ideal behaviour for the Knights, such as the types of garments they were to wear and how to eat. As the Order grew, more guidelines were added, and the original list of 72 clauses was expanded to several hundred in its final form. They built churches and castles. They had their own fleet of ships and at one point they even owned the entire island of Cyprus. Around 1119 A.D., King Baldwin II of Jerusalem agreed to grant the request to form a monastic order for the protection of the pilgrims travelling to the Holy Land in Jerusalem. This request  of this new order came from a French knight Hugues de Payens and his relative Godfrey de Saint-Omer.
