A triumph. Now I know what it means when reviewers label a book or a film as a triumph. For an author, any book completed which accomplishes its purpose must be considered a triumph, at least a personal victory. But a book like 'The Chimes', in all its originality, lyrical prose and blend of dystopia and fantasy, is not only a triumph for New Zealand author, Anna Smaill, but for the reader and the world of literature. It is more than deserving of its long-listing for the 2015 Man Booker…

As an English teacher, I knew I needed to read some more literature by female authors so I could make better recommendations for my students, and I'd heard good things about Amy Tan, so I took this book home from my back table to start this year's holiday reading. While the major theme of mother-daughter relationships is not my favourite, I did appreciate it as I saw some shadows of my own daughter's, wife's and mother-in-law's lives. There is an excellent mystery story here as well, as…

There's something rotten in the city-state of Thebes. I read this "trilogy" of plays over several years from the end of high school to the end of university. I studied "Antigone" in Grade 12, then "Oedipus the King" as part of a classics English course and "Oedipus at Colonus" as part of a Philosophy and Literature course. I have always employed the story of "Oedipus the King" and some of Aristotle's commentary on it as part of my teaching about Shakespearean tragedy. So, I was delighted…

"Curley's wife lay with a half-covering of yellow hay. And the meanness and the plannings and the discontent and the ache for attention were all gone from her face. She was very pretty and simple, and her face was sweet and young. Now her rouged cheeks and her reddened lips made her seem alive and sleeping very lightly. The curls, tiny little sausages, were spread on the hay behind her head, and he lips were parted. "As happens sometimes, a moment settled and hovered and remained for much…

I'd been meaning to read this book for a few years. It's been awhile since I've read anything with overt Christian themes and I am more interested in fiction these days. So I was really looking forward to reading Joshua to start these holidays. The premise is intriguing - a modern day parable exploring what might happen were Jesus to return, specifically to small-town America. Maybe it was because I had just finished reading Don Watson's "Death Sentences", a crtitique of modern public…
