Charles Heaphy, VC. A famous artist who painted works of the early colonial era in New Zealand, Heaphy surveyed roads for the military during the invasion of Waikato. On February 11,1864, while commanding a force of the Auckland militia, Heaphy rescued a wounded soldier under fire, receiving three wounds in the process. He was awarded the Victoria Cross, the first colonial soldier and commander of irregular forces to receive the award.
