Artists of this time often made Maori look comical and quirky, so this ones pretty dam good! 1930-1939    Half-length portrait of Hongi Hika, shown with full facial moko, in a flax cloak, holding a musket. Behind him is a sailing ship, probably in the Bay of Islands, where Hongi came from.    Hongi's iwi, Ngapuhi, was a large northern tribe, not a small one.
